NEWS OF THE WASHINGTON BLVD BRIDGE RENOVATION

From the Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization's monthly newsletter:

Washington Blvd. Bridge soon to be replaced.

VDoT announced that it is in the process of finding a contractor to complete the design and construct an improved interchange between Columbia Pike and Route 27.
The project includes replacing the current Washington Boulevard Bridge. Heavy construction at the site isn't expected before the summer of 2011. Completion is projected for 2014

John Paul Liebertz will take us back to 1810 when the US Congress chartered the Columbia Turnpike Company and will guide us through two centuries of astonishing local history and the evolution of Columbia Pike from a rural road to the vibrant and diverse community it is today.

PLANETARIUM PROGRAM AND FUNDRAISER

Please consider visiting Arlington's only planetarium on July 31. It may be your last chance, and you'll enjoy it. For those who do not know, the David M. Brown Planetarium (named in honor of the Arlingtonian who lost his life in the Columbia Space Shuttle accident) is located at 1426 North Quincy Street next door to to the school system's administrative offices and Washington Lee High School.

Our planetarium is on life support, and the community must raise approximately $140,000 by September in order to keep the doors open. Thus far, only a few thousand dollars have been raised. There will be 35-minute indoor planetarium shows every hour on the hour from 4 to 8 pm. Beginning at 5 pm, there will be telescopes and other outdoor activities for kids of all ages to enjoy. Admission is free and open to the public, but a $5 donation ($10 for families) is requested.

Please take a couple of minutes to forward this message to your neighbors and friends in Arlington. Planetariums spark children's interest in science, and today's planetariums can provide a lot more programming than just star shows. I hope I'll see you there. COME MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS!!! FUN, FOOD AND GREAT COMPANY!!!

Please join the Arlington View Civic Association in celebrating Neighborhood Day on Saturday, May 15 from Noon until 3 pm on the lawn of the Carver Community Center.

A bicycle parade will kick off the festivities at 12:05. Please decorate your bike, scooter, wagon, skateboard or other non-motorized vehicle and meet in the Carver Center parking lot at noon.

A potluck lunch will follow. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share.

Volunteers are needed to help with serving and grilling food (30 minute shifts), set-up at 11 am and cleanup from 3:00 until 3:45 pm.
