Arlington Public Schools (APS) is working on the strategic plan for 2011-17. The most critical part of this process is gathering input from the APS community. From November through January, APS conducted forums with the community, staff, and students, to discuss the priorities that should be reflected in the next strategic plan. 
We are now asking community members, staff, and students to tell us what you think are the most important of these priorities for our school district as we move forward. If you have not previously filled out a strategic plan survey, please click on the link below and complete this 10-minute survey at your convenience, but no later than Friday, March 18.

A local resident has started a blog about the happenings along Columbia Pike.  The Pike Wire can be accessed at www.piketowncenter.com.  On the site there is also a link to another Arlington blog, ARLnow.  Both contain great information and news about Arlington.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENTS

 
Black History Month Gospel Concert and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at
Walter Reed Community Center

Celebrate Black History Month on Wednesday, February 9 at Walter 
Reed Community Center with a Gospel concert from members of the 
Macedonia Baptist Church!
 
The concert starts at 11:00am, and will 
give expression to the spiritual values of African American 
culture. Performances will be enriched by Minister of Music David 
Nelson who will lead a discussion on the historical significance of 
each song.
 
Come early for a ribbon cutting ceremony, hot chocolate, 
and cookies in the Walter Reed café.
 
Arlington County Board  Chairman Chris Zimmerman will introduce the Gospel choir and 
commemorate the redesigned entrance features at Walter Reed, 
including the installation of a solid steel picket fence and a new 
entrance sign, will take place just before the concert.

The contribution of African Americans to Arlington's history is the theme of
this year's celebration of Black History month. A short film on Freedman's
Village, a discussion of the Black Heritage Museum and the report of a study
of black businesses in Arlington and how they were affected by integration
are just some of the highlights of this program.

There is a small fee for lunch. If you want to stay for lunch, be sure to
make your reservation by Monday, February 14,by calling 703-228-0951.

The following information is about the Special Education chat with Superintendent Dr. Patrick Murphy hosted by the new Special Education PTA.

Arlington parents and educators recently formed the first Special Education PTA (SEPTA) in Virginia. The overarching goal of the Arlington SEPTA is to support, strengthen and promote the welfare of children with special needs and Arlington County's special education programs. SEPTA membership is not specific to any one school but serves all schools in Arlington County and its members are encouraged to join and participate in their school-specific PTAs as well.

The SEPTA would like to invite parents, educators, and all others who support children with special needs to an upcoming chat with Dr. Patrick Murphy, Superintendent of Arlington Public Schools. The SEPTA chat with the Superintendent will take place:

Metrobus Changes in December

Comments on Columbia Pike Transit Initiative due Dec. 3rd

The Pike (Columbia Pike) Transit Initiative is seeking public comments by Dec. 3rd, 2010 in regard to installation of a streetcar which will service the Columbia Pike corridor including Pentagon City. A concern for some residents might be the location of the power sub-station close to our neighborhood at Columbia Pike and Washington Boulevard. Please see Patty's concerns in the e-mail below. I submitted the following comments under the various sections of the Online form:

 

Environmental Assessment should include input from Arlington County Natural Resources Manager and other local ecology specialists to examine any potential effects on rare or endangered species. Determining any potential to effect such species should consist of more that checking a database.

 

Other planning processes should include EXTENSIVE documentation and expert input from multiple authoritative sources in regard to power sub stations/electronic and magnetic fields and adverse effects on human populations including infants and children. Proposed power station location for this initiate is adjacent to a neighborhood of families and young children, an elementary school which provides pre-school services, a community center, church and a playground.

 

Alignment scope should include/consider relief to communities, commuters, traffic congestion and route services to the DoD BRAC133/Mark Center       

 

Power sub station can be located further down Columbia Pike toward the Pentagon
